Expository Artifact: Challenges when mentoring new staff.

For the purpose of this expository artifact, an exploratory review of articles on challenges that educators face when mentoring new graduate nurses was completed. These articles were identified through a search on EBSCO host in the following databases: CINAHL, Medline, Cochrane Databases of Systematic Reviews, Athabasca library on-line and Google Scholar. The key search words used included: challenges, barriers, obstacles, transition, mentors, mentoring, mentorship, new graduate nurses, new to practice nurses, newly graduated nurses, and novice nurses


The search was limited to articles published between 2005 and 2020 that were full text, English and accessible to the writer. Based on the articles that were reviewed, there were some challenges that were identified with regards to mentoring novice nurses. These were grouped into four categories: interpersonal conflict, role transition, resources and starting point. A mind map was created to show relationships between challenges and allow the viewer to see an overview of this topic.
